AN INTERGENERATIONAL EXPERIMENT
The BooMillennial Lab is an intergenerational project connecting a community of Baby Boomers, Millennials and beyond through shared stories. With the onset of COVID-19, many people in these different generations found themselves unexpectedly navigating their days, weeks, and months together where every day felt (and still feels) like Groundhog’s Day. During this time when we are literally wearing masks on our faces, ironically, some of the most transparent, honest, unscripted, and often humorous conversations have taken place. At home and in the workplace, somehow, we have adapted and are learning from each other.
According to the Pew Research Center, the coronavirus outbreak has pushed millions of Americans, especially young adults, to move in with family members. The share of 18 to 29-year-olds (young adults) living with their parents has surpassed the previous peak which was during the Great Depression era. From February 2020 to July 2020 more than 2.6 million young adults moved into one or both of their parent’s homes due to Covid-19 related reasons.
Included in these statistics are our kids who were very independent and busy conquering the world before bringing their backpacks and dirty laundry back into our homes. How have our perspectives changed by navigating these crazy COVID times together? While this time of uncertainty in our world has brought great sadness, surprisingly, it has also revealed some of the best and most generous sides of our collective humanity. Polarized political views and systemic racial injustice has percolated to the surface in ways that are undeniable, forcing all of us to confront our core beliefs and ask ourselves important questions. Some of us are caring for elderly parents, while some of us are virtually-schooling young children from the kitchen table. At the same time, we have spent most of this year buying toilet paper, wearing exercise clothes, binge-watching TV, and cooking comfort food.
We are gathering stories from this very unique time and we want to hear from you. What have you learned? What have been your most meaningful and funniest moments, and of course, how has your purpose evolved during this crazy year? Our hope is that through our collective stories, we can bring awareness to the synergies between Baby Boomers, Millennials and beyond. We want to encourage growth mindsets and foster fabulous relationships across the generations. Please join us and share your BooMillennial story https://forms.gle/P1ve66XcHqvubtXy5
